Myself as a writer - 1st Assignment

I have succinct and direct writing style. I believe that overuse of minor details and modifiers hinder readers from understanding the main point I want to make. However, I don’t deny that effective use of minor details and adequate examples is necessary element of good writing, so I’m sometimes envious of people who are good at those. The problem with my writing is that sometimes, the ideas get too vague and makes people difficult to understand what I try to say.
Biggest problem with my writing is a grammar mistake. My biggest concern before writing an essay is about grammar, since I’m still unconfident with my grammar skills. As I was learning English I didn’t put much effort in grammar compare to other aspects. My older sister, on the other hand, barely makes grammar mistakes on her essay or in casual talk. Once she read my essay and surprised by poor grammar level and since then I tried hard to improve on my weakness and tried to correct mistakes whenever I notice them. I believe I’m improved compare to the past but I still have a long way to go.
Another problem that I have is it takes me so long to complete one piece of writing. Writing a good essay is important but writing in a reasonable amount of time is also very important. I think I write too slowly. When I start to write, I think of too much things at the same time, which makes me unfocused.  The pace gets even slower when I’m under pressure.
My ultimate goal is to write an essay that fully delivers my thoughts and ideas without any grammar mistakes. Sometimes as I write in English, I feel like my original thoughts are miswritten due to inappropriate expressions and vocabularies. Then I feel the need to improve my level of English, specifically by learning many expressions and through writing many essays.  I wish I could achieve my goal here in KMLA with the help of teachers and my peers.
I love to write about my opinions on topics that have no right answer but I don’t like to write about preference questions or argumentative topic. These topics make me choose only one side and defend it even though I believe that both sides are partially correct. Sometimes I even have to make up reasons or write with the side that I don’t support. Once I participated a philosophical writing contest, which I definitely didn’t expected any prize. The topic asked for my opinion on selfishness. I wrote that selfishness is not all negative and it helps human beings to improve, and it gave me an unexpected prize. Writing an essay always seemed to me like an agonizing task, but I sincerely just enjoyed writing at that moment. That was the best writing I’ve ever done but I can’t post it on the blog since I submitted it.
As I was growing up, I rarely had a chance to write in English. I really appreciate that I’m getting a lot of chance to prepare. However, I wish to develop further by learning advanced style of writing and writing on variety of topics. So in this class, I want to have chance to write on wide variety of topics, and also I want to learn how to write more effective essay.

  1. I'm happy with what I see so far, and can see a solid writer in the making. That said, I think rereading and using MS Word for help will point out problem areas that you can easily fix. For a guy whose never lived abroad you are doing great, and I think style and flow are two things you can start building now that your grammar shouldn't be such a big worry.

You write that you feel a lot of pressure and stress while writing. My suggestion is to let loose and really treat a first draft as what it should be - a first draft that you aren't going to hand in. Pretend you are writing to a friend on Facebook instead of a teacher at KMLA. Don't worry about grammar and fancy sentences or even periods. Get your ideas out and play your keyboard like a piano. Bang it out. A second draft is where you cut away the fat, and third is where you polish things to a shine. I think most students only write one draft, which is a hard habit to break.

Good stuff and keep up the good work. I'm sure you'll find most assignments of some interest.
